Come utilizzare POI Finder

Select city and category

Choose the Italian city and the relevant Point of Interest category (museums, galleries, libraries, theaters, restaurants, attractions). You can search across all categories simultaneously by leaving the field blank.

Set result limit and search

Set the maximum number of results (10-200) and click "Search POIs" to query the open data database. Results show name, category, coordinates, and data source for each found POI.

Use POIs to plan your itinerary

Results include geographic coordinates of each POI: use for importing into Google Maps, Organic Maps or any navigation app. Data sources (OSM, Wikidata) are indicated for each result for transparency.

  • Combine POI Finder with Google Maps: search Bologna museums, select the most interesting from the list and add them to a personalized Google Maps list "Bologna Trip". You'll have a pre-made, geolocated itinerary ready to follow offline.
  • Category "attraction" includes monuments, historic squares and general interest places: and the most varied category is often the richest in results for cities with strong historical-artistic heritage. Use it as a starting point for discovery and then refine with specific categories.
  • Plan a museum itinerary by using the "museum" category with 50-100 results, sort by geographic location on the map to create a logical route without unnecessary backtracking. In Italian art cities, nearby museums often share opening hours and cumulative ticket prices.

Where do the data for POIs come from?

Data comes from OpenStreetMap (ODbL license) and Wikidata (CC0 license), both open-data datasets maintained by the community. The ingestion pipeline downloads data via Overpass API and imports it into our PostgreSQL database. The origin of the original data is always attributed in the results table.

Why are some POIs missing or data is empty?

Completeness depends on the quality of OSM data for that city. POIs not yet mapped to OSM or with incomplete tags do not appear in results. Larger cities (Rome, Milan, Florence) have much higher coverage than smaller centers. You can contribute by adding or correcting POIs on OpenStreetMap.org.

Can I use these data for a commercial application?

Data from OSM is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL): you can use them freely for commercial purposes, but must attribute OpenStreetMap and share any modifications to the database with the same license. Data from Wikidata (CC0) are completely free. See complete licenses on openstreetmap.org/copyright and creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/.

How many points of interest are available in the database?

The number of POIs in the database depends on the last ingestion pipeline execution. If the database is empty (state "never_run"), the pipeline has not been executed on production environment yet. The tool always shows source data status in page header for transparency.
