Interpret data for planning
Use the Cultural Density Index as a proxy for cultural richness and urban quality of life. Cities with high indices offer more variety of cultural attractions to residents, useful both for planning trips and evaluating cities to move to.

- Assessing which Italian city to move to for work, consider the Cultural Density Index alongside other non-covered parameters: rent costs (idealista.it), average salary per sector (ISTAT), and quality of public transportation. The cultural index is just one dimension of urban life quality.
- Cities like Bologna, Florence and Turin tend to have high cultural indices despite having a much smaller population than Milan or Rome: and the effect of "density" that favors medium-sized cities with concentrated historical heritage. Do not interpret a high index as "big city": it could be a small but culturally rich city.
- Data "restaurants per 100,000 inhabitants" is an interesting proxy for the vitality of the historic center and the quality of social life: cities with high restaurant density tend to have more neighborhood life and sociality. Compare this to theater density to measure the complementarity between popular culture and high culture.

What does the "Cultural Density Index" measure?
The Cultural Density Index is a composite index that measures the concentration of cultural structures per capita: museums, galleries, theaters, libraries, restaurants and attractions. It does not measure the quality of the structures or the level of economic life (income, cost of living). It is an indicator of cultural offer and urban diversity, not a ranking of "best cities".
Do city capitals cover all data?
Current dataset version covers 20 Italian regional capitals. Data comes from OpenStreetMap (POI geolocated) and open data ISTAT sources for population. Future versions may expand coverage to provincial capitals or European cities, depending on available comparable open data.
How are "POIs per 100,000 inhabitants" calculated?
Points of Interest are counted within the administrative boundary of the municipality in the geospatial database. The calculation is simply: (number_POI / population) * 100,000. The reference population is that of the latest available ISTAT census in the dataset. Duplicate POIs in OSM (same location with multiple tags) can lead to an overcount.
Can I compare Italian cities with European cities?
The current dataset is limited to Italian regional capitals to ensure methodological coherence (same OSM source, same granularity of POIs, same population base from ISTAT). A comparison across Europe would require normalization of different definitions of "museum" or "restaurant" between countries, which has not yet been implemented. The Travel Intelligence "Best Time to Visit" tool instead covers some European cities.
