How is the distance between two airports calculated?
The distance is calculated using the Haversine formula, which calculates the shortest great-circle distance between two airports' geographic coordinates on Earth's surface. It's the shortest distance between two points on a sphere.
Why is flight time only an estimate?
Estimated flight time uses an average speed of 850 km/h (typical cruise speed for commercial aircraft). Actual time varies based on the type of aircraft, weather conditions, actual air routes, waiting times, and wind.
How is the CO2 estimate calculated?
Estimate CO2 emissions use emission factors per mile per passenger: 0.255 kg CO2/mile for short trips (<1500 miles), 0.156 for medium (1500-4000 miles) and long (>4000 miles) trips, multiplied by the Radiative Forcing Index (RFI) of 2.7 to account for non-CO2 effects of in-flight activities.
Does the calculator include direct flights or with layovers?
The calculator shows the straight-line distance (great-circle) between the two airports, which is approximately equal to a direct flight. Flights with layovers naturally cover a greater distance.
What is the IATA code of an airport?
IATA code is a 3-letter alphabetical code assigned by the International Air Transport Association to every airport worldwide. For example, FCO is Rome Fiumicino, LHR is London Heathrow, JFK is New York John F. Kennedy.
