How many characters can the title tag have?
Google shows the title up to approximately 580 pixels wide in desktop, not a fixed number of characters. Using different fonts yields different results. Aim for titles around 50-60 characters as a general guideline, but always verify with a pixel-based previewer.
How many characters can the meta description have?
Google shows the meta description up to about 920 pixels on desktop, corresponding to around 155-160 characters. Google can also automatically generate snippets from page content, so the meta description is not always what's displayed.
Why do desktop and mobile show different truncations?
Mobile Google layout has narrower column widths for titles (around 600px), so the title may be truncated before desktop. It's essential to optimize for both views since over 60% of searches occur on mobile devices.
Is the URL shown in the SERP the real one?
Google can modify the displayed URL in the result to make it more readable, using breadcrumb structure instead of full URL. The canonical URL in meta remains real; the displayed one is indicative and depends on how Google interprets the site's structure.
