What is this HS code and what does it serve?
Harmonized System (HS) code is an international customs nomenclature system developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO). Each product has a unique code that determines its tariff rate, import/export restrictions, and documentary requirements. In the EU, the system is implemented as TARIC (Tariff Integrated of European Communities).
How many digits does a HS/TARIC code have?
Standard HS code has 6 digits (Chapter 2 + Heading 2 + Subheading 2). The EU Customs Code CN extends to 8 digits. The complete TARIC code is 10 digits long. This tool accepts codes from 4 to 10 digits - insert the code without spaces or dashes.
Are the data shown in TARIC up-to-date?
Data is updated as of the date indicated in the "Dataset" badge above the result. Our server updates the TARIC dataset periodically (TTL 7 days). For official operations, always check the official TARIC database by the European Commission or contact the Customs and Monopolies Agency.
What does "base rate" mean versus "customs VAT"?
Customs duty rate is the tariff applied to CIF value of goods (cost + insurance + freight) for importation into the EU. Import VAT is the value-added tax applied to the imponible value (tariff + cost of goods) at the time of customs clearance - usually ordinary tariff of the destination EU country.
Can I rely on this tool for customs declarations?
No. This tool is exclusively informative. Official customs declarations require a complete 10-digit TARIC code, verified through the official EU TARIC portal or with assistance from an authorized customs broker (Article 18 CDU, Regulation 952/2013). Tariffs may vary based on the country of origin of the goods (preferential trade agreements) and specific anti-dumping measures.
Are my data being sent to third parties?
No. The HS code you entered is sent exclusively to our backend server for querying the local TARIC database (Redis cache). No data is transmitted to European Commission sites or third-party entities. Optional AI analysis is performed through our on-premise ML service.
How is it used?
- Enter HS CodeEnter the HS code (4-10 digits, no points) of the goods you want to import or export. For example: 8471 for computers, 8703 for cars. You can find the HS code on your commercial invoice or customs documentation.
- Add a descriptive commodity description (optional)If you want to use AI analysis, add a brief description of the product (max 200 characters). Use only general product descriptions - do not include company data, customer names or personal data.
- Click "Search TaxThe system queries our updated TARIC dataset (cache Redis, TTL 7 days) and returns the base tariff rate, import VAT rate, and any special measures. No data is sent to external sites - only to our backend server.
- Interpret the result and consult an expertResult shows the updated Taric base duty rate (top badge). Use these data as a starting point and always verify with a customs broker or consultant before completing import/export operations.
What is TARIC and why is it important for businesses?
The TARIC (Taric Integrated of European Communities) is the integrated customs database of the European Union, collecting all tariff rates, special tariff measures, suspensions, quotas and commercial measures for every HS code. Every business importing or exporting physical goods to or from the EU must correctly classify its merchandise according to the TARIC nomenclature.
Incorrect classification may result in underpaid duties (with consequent forced recovery and fines from the Customs Agency) or overpaid duties (with loss of competitiveness). This tool offers a quick consultation of the TARIC dataset to guide classification, without replacing the advice of an authorized customs broker.
Data is served by our backend via updated Redis cache, periodically refreshed. The dataset date is always visible in the badge above the result. No requests are sent to third-party sites from the user's browser.
Practical example
An Italian company imports portable computers from China. The HS code is 8471.30 (without points, as 84713000). The TARIC shows a base rate of 0% for laptops (OMC IT-ITA agreement) and VAT import 22% (ordinary tax rate). There may be specific anti-dumping measures for Chinese-sourced products - always check the additional measures shown in the result.
