What is OEE?

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is a key metric for measuring the overall efficiency of a production facility. It combines availability, performance, and quality into a single percentage index. An OEE of 100% means perfect production: no downtime, running at maximum speed, zero defects.

What is a good OEE value?

For mass production, an OEE of 85% is considered excellent and represents world-class benchmarking. An OEE of 60% is quite typical for many manufacturers. Below 40% indicates there is significant room for improvement.

How can OEE be improved?

The six big losses OEE are: breakdowns, setup/time loss, minor stops, speed loss, defects/scrap, startups. Analyzing which of the three factors (availability, performance, quality) is lowest guides improvement actions.

What is the difference between OEE and TEEP?

The TEEP (Total Effective Equipment Performance) also includes hours when the plant is scheduled not to work (unplanned shifts). OEE measures efficiency during planned time; TEEP measures utilization against total available time (24/7).

How is it used?

  1. Check availability

    Availability is the ratio of actual operating time to scheduled time. Subtract unscheduled machine stops from total available time.

  2. Calculate performance

    The performance compares the actual production speed with the ideal speed (nominal speed). Micro-stops and slowdowns reduce this value.

  3. Rate the quality

    Quality is the percentage of conforming pieces (defect-free) out of the total produced, including both rejected and reworked pieces.

  4. Calculate OEE

    OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality. A value ≥85% is considered excellent for mass production; the global benchmark for optimized plants is approximately 85%.
