What is AI Readiness for a SME?
AI Readiness measures how ready a company is to adopt artificial intelligence effectively. It assesses 6 dimensions: strategy, data, infrastructure, skills, processes, and governance. A low score doesn't mean you can't start - it shows where to begin with the most impact.
How long does this assessment take?
The wizard is designed to be completed in 5–10 minutes. It only requires answering self-assessment questions about your current PMI level in 6 key areas. No specific technical or financial data is needed.
What are the levels of AI Readiness?
The model distinguishes 5 levels: Initial (0–20%), Emerging (21–40%), Developing (41–60%), Advanced (61–80%) and Leader (81–100%). Most Italian SMEs fall between Emerging and Developing according to the Politecnico di Milano AI Observatory 2024.
What does the PDF report include?
The PDF report includes: overall score and scores for the 6 dimensions, prioritized gap analysis, 3 immediate action recommendations, EU AI Act PMI checklist, and a 12-month roadmap to develop AI skills. It is sent by email free of charge.
What does the EU AI Act entail for SMEs?
The EU AI Act 2024/1689 classifies AI systems by risk level. SMEs developing or using high-risk AI systems (e.g., in HR, credit, education, security) must comply with transparency, documentation, and human oversight requirements. The AI Act provides exemptions and simplifications for micro and small enterprises.
Is the data I enter safe?
All calculations happen in your browser. Responses to the wizard are not sent to any server. Only the email for the PDF is sent (optional). Free notes are sanitized before processing to prevent injection (D-50-21).

AI Readiness for PMI: why measure it in 2026
The adoption of artificial intelligence in Italian SMEs is rapidly growing: according to the Politecnico di Milano 2024 AI Observatory, 56% of SMEs have started at least one AI project, but only 18% have a structured program. The gap between intention and capability is the main obstacle to effective adoption.
The AI Readiness Assessment measures this gap across 6 dimensions: strategy and leadership (AI vision, executive sponsorship), data quality (structuring, governance), technological infrastructure (cloud/on-prem, compute), skills and culture (internal skills, training), processes and use cases (digitalization, experimentation), and AI compliance (EU AI Act, GDPR for AI).
The EU AI Act (Regulation UE 2024/1689) introduces increasing obligations for organizations developing or using AI systems. SMEs that start a readiness journey now have a competitive advantage: they not only comply sooner but also build the foundations for sustainable AI transformation. The wizard also simplifies compliance assessment.
The NIST AI Risk Management Framework 1.0 (2023) and the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 define international best practices for AI governance. The 6 dimensions of this assessment align with the NIST AI RMF principles (GOVERN, MAP, MEASURE, MANAGE) and are adapted to the reality of Italian SMEs, without the enterprise complexity of full frameworks.

AI Readiness Glossary
- AI Preparedness
- Measure of an organization's ability to effectively adopt artificial intelligence. Includes technological (data, infrastructure), organizational (strategy, skills), and governance (compliance, processes) dimensions. Source: NIST AI RMF 1.0.
- EU Artificial Intelligence Regulation (Regulation No. 2023/2085 is incorrect, the correct one to use here would be Reg. 2024/
- First global comprehensive AI regulation in effect from August 2, 2024. Classifies AI systems by risk level (unacceptable, high, limited, minimal) and mandates transparency, documentation, and human oversight obligations. Phased implementation until 2027.
- NIST Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0)
- Voluntary Framework by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (USA) for AI risk management. Consists of 4 functions: GOVERN (governance), MAP (risk identification), MEASURE (risk analysis), MANAGE (risk response). Compatible with EU AI Act and ISO/IEC 42001.
- Data Governance and Compliance Assistant
- Set of policies, processes, and roles ensuring the quality, accessibility, and compliance of data used to train and operate AI systems. Includes data catalog, data quality KPIs, data stewardship, and consent management (GDPR). Critical for readiness: without quality data, AI underperforms.
- Machine Learning Operations
- Set of practices that unite Machine Learning and DevOps to automate the AI model lifecycle (development, testing, deployment, monitoring, retraining). Indicator of advanced AI maturity: SMEs with MLOps can iterate models in weeks rather than months.
- AI Mastermind
- Internal figure responsible for driving AI adoption in the organization. Translates AI vision into concrete initiatives, engages business units, monitors KPIs, and bridges management and technical teams. Maturity indicator in the Strategy & Leadership dimension.
