Suggerimenti

Domande frequenti

How does student loan repayment work in the UK?

Repayments are automatically deducted from your payslip like taxes (PAYE). You only pay a percentage of income above the threshold: there is no fixed instalment. If you earn below the threshold, you pay nothing.

What is the difference between Plan 2 and Plan 5?

Plan 2 (2012-2023): threshold £27,295, written off after 30 years. Plan 5 (from 2023): lower threshold £25,000, but written off after 40 years. Plan 5 leads to higher repayments over time.

What happens if I don't repay the debt within the write-off period?

The outstanding balance is automatically written off after the deadline (25-40 years depending on the plan). The write-off may however be subject to taxation as income in your country of residence.

Does a student loan affect my mortgage?

A student loan does not affect your credit score, but it reduces your disposable income (like a tax). Banks take it into account when calculating how much you can borrow for a mortgage.

Can I repay my student loan early?

Yes, you can make additional voluntary payments directly to the Student Loans Company. It's only worth doing if you're almost certain you'll repay it in full before the write-off date.
