How is distance between two cities calculated?
We use the Haversine formula to calculate the shortest distance on the Earth's surface (great circle route) using geographic coordinates, taking into account the Earth's curvature.
Why does the estimated flight time differ from the actual flight?
Estimated time divides the distance by 850 km/h (cruise speed average). Real flights are longer due to: non-direct routes (air traffic control), headwinds, takeoff/landing phases, and possible stops.
Is driving time realistic?
Driving time is purely theoretical and based on 80 km/h average over long distances. It's not possible for intercontinental routes (e.g. Europe-USA) on road. It's useful only for comparison over regional distances.
What does "line of sight distance" mean?
The straight-line distance (or "bird's-eye view" distance) is the shortest path on land between two points. It does not correspond to road distance or actual air route length.
Why is distance not matching with Google Maps?
Google Maps shows the actual road distance or aerial route, following real infrastructure. This calculator uses the Haversine formula for direct geodetic distance, which is always lower than any practical route.
