What is IMT?

The Imposto Municipal sobre as Transmissões Onerosas de Imóveis (IMT) is paid when purchasing property in Portugal. It is a progressive tax that applies to the purchase value or the VPT (whichever is higher). It must be paid before the deed (escritura).

Is there an IMT exemption for young buyers?

Since 2024, buyers up to 35 years old purchasing their first home are exempt from IMT and stamp duty when acquiring a property intended as their primary and permanent residence, regardless of its value.

What is stamp duty on a property purchase?

Imposto do Selo (stamp duty) on a property purchase is 0.8% of the purchase value. It is settled at the same time as IMT, before the deed is signed.
