Domande frequenti

How much is the child allowance in 2026?

From 2023 the Kindergeld has been simplified: €255 per month for each child, regardless of order (previously €219, €225, €250, €276 for first/second/third/fourth+ child). It remains unchanged in 2026.

How long do you have entitlement to child allowance?

Age 18 and under. Extends to age 21 if the child is unemployed and registered with the Arbeitsagentur. Extends to age 25 if the child is in training (Ausbildung, Studium, Praktikum). Beyond age 25 it's no longer possible.

Who receives the child allowance?

Received by those living in Germany or with German tax residency. Can be requested by one parent. Required from the Federal Family Office of the Federal Labour Agency. Retroactive payment is limited to 6 months.

What is the child benefit and child tax credit?

Tax office automatically compares the child benefit with the child tax allowance (6,672 EUR per child in 2026). If the child tax allowance results in greater tax savings, it is applied and the received child benefit will be deducted from taxes.
