What are CO2e emissions?
Carbon dioxide equivalent (tons of CO2 equivalent) express the climate impact of various greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O) in a single unit. Methane, for example, has a global warming potential 28x that of CO2 over 100 years (GWP100).
Why is Italy's average CO2 emissions per year at 5.4 tCO2e?
The ISPRA 2024 data includes direct emissions (domestic combustion, transportation) and indirect emissions (product production, food consumption). It does not include the extended scope 3 emissions of the supply chain, which would result in the highest total.
Does company mode include Scope 3 emissions?
No. The calculator covers Scope 1 (direct combustion), Scope 2 (energy purchased), and a proxy for business flights (Scope 3 partial). Complete Scope 3 emissions of the supply chain (suppliers, sold products) require professional ESG audits.
Why does an electric car have a positive footprint?
Electric grid emission factor in Italy is 0.226 kg CO2e/kWh (ISPRA 2026): not yet zero. An EV still emits 0.040 kg CO2e/km - ~4.3x less than gasoline - thanks to the electric motor's efficiency and increasing renewable mix.
Are these calculations sufficient for an ESG report?
No. Values are indicative based on standard coefficients 2026. For ESG certified reports (GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, ISO 14064, SBTi), third-party auditor-conducted audits are required.
