- Contribution to the SVS is deductible for tax purposes as Business Expense. Reduces taxable income for purposes of Income Tax.
- Self-employment provision (pension plan for self-employed workers, BV fund): since 2008, self-employed workers can voluntarily pay 1.53% into a supplementary pension fund with tax benefits.
- Warning on currency exchange: if income is significantly above expectations, the SVS balance can be substantial. Consider monthly savings.
Domande frequenti
Who is subject to the SVS?
The SVS applies to self-employed workers, freelancers, craftspeople and traders registered with the Gewerbeanmeldung (trade register). New entrepreneurs benefit from reduced rates in the first 3 years.
How is the contribution base calculated?
The SVS contribution base is the previous year's Gewinn (profit) divided by 12. A monthly minimum (551.10 EUR) and maximum (7,070 EUR) apply. The final settlement occurs after the tax return.
What are the SVS rates for new entrepreneurs?
In the first 3 years (Neugründungsphase, start-up phase) the KV and PV rates are reduced. From the 4th year onwards, the full rates apply. The minimum KV still guarantees basic health coverage.
How does the SVS final settlement work?
During the year, SVS advance payments are made based on estimated income. After the tax return (Einkommensteuererklärung) the SVS recalculates the final contributions and either requests the balance due or refunds the surplus.
