Frequently Asked Questions
How is the hourly cost of a CNC machine calculated?
Hourly CNC cost is obtained by summing five components: (1) hourly depreciation (cost of purchase ÷ useful life years ÷ annual hours), (2) energy cost (kW × €/kWh × usage factor), (3) cutting tool cost, (4) setup and equipment cost, (5) labor operator cost. The result is the effective hourly machine operation cost.
What is a typical hourly cost for a CNC machine in Italy?
Hourly cost of an Italian CNC workshop varies generally between €30-€120 per hour depending on the machine class, power, and sector. Two-axis CNC lathes typically range from €25-€50/h; three to five-axis machining centers can exceed €80-€120/h including qualified labor and high-value tools.
What is the energy usage factor?
The energy utilisation factor (0–1) represents the percentage of time the main motor is actually under load. A CNC machine in operation never uses the installed power at 100%: pauses, rapid moves, tool changes and idle time reduce actual consumption. Typical values range from 0.60 (light work) to 0.85 (continuous heavy machining).
How are tool costs calculated for a one-time machine?
Cost of tools per hour is estimated by dividing the average cost of consumable tools by their useful life in hours. For example, a whole wheat apple costing €80 with an actual cutting time of 40 minutes equals €120/h of pure tool cost. In CNC machining this varies greatly: aluminum alloy cutting has low tool costs, while titanium or hard steel require expensive inserts and reduced useful life.
Is setup cost included in hourly machine rental?
Depends on the accounting approach. If frequent setups (small batch productions) are involved, it's convenient to include them in hourly cost as a separate item to be distributed over productive hours. For long-cycle productions, the setup is often directly attributed to the lot as fixed cost. This tool manages it as part of the hourly cost for maximum transparency and comparison.
Do calculations occur in the browser or on the server?
All calculations occur exclusively in the browser - no data is sent to external servers. The contextual AI analysis uses a model served by OpenRouter: prompts are not used to train the models, retention by the provider is not ruled out, and data may leave the European Union.
How is it used?
- Insert purchase and useful data
Indicate the purchase cost of the CNC machine (€) and the expected useful life in years. These parameters determine the daily amortized depreciation.
- Configure energy costs
Insert power installed (kW), energy price (€/kWh), and energy usage factor (typically 0.70-0.85 for CNC centers).
- Add tools, setup and labor
Insert the hourly cost of cutting tools, equipment setup and operator machine. The model calculates the total hourly cost and percentage of each item.
- Interpret the result with the AI
After calculation, the AI analyzes cost breakdown and suggests optimization areas compared to industry benchmarks.
