What is Working Tax Credit (WTC)?

WTC is a means-tested payment for people who work and are on a low income. It is being gradually replaced by Universal Credit (UC) for new claimants. Existing WTC/CTC claimants are being migrated to UC.

Is WTC still available?

New claims for WTC/CTC closed in 2019. DWP is migrating all existing claimants to Universal Credit by 2025. If you currently claim WTC, check your migration timeline at gov.uk/universal-credit.

How does the income taper work?

For every £1 of income above the threshold (£7,455), your WTC is reduced by 41p. The reduction applies first to WTC and then to CTC until entitlement reaches zero.

How does Universal Credit differ from WTC?

Universal Credit replaces WTC, CTC, Housing Benefit, Income Support and more into a single payment. UC uses a monthly assessment period and a different taper rate (55p per £1 earned above the work allowance).
